Handling Difficult Moments with Confidence
Module 3 of The Empowered DA series
Difficult moments are an inevitable part of dental practice. A patient may be frustrated by a delay, unhappy about an experience, confused by information or simply feeling anxious and overwhelmed.
As a Dental Assistant, you may not always be able to fix the problem yourself, but the way you respond can have a significant influence on what happens next.
In this module, you’ll learn practical strategies to regulate your own response, understand what may be driving a patient’s behaviour and communicate calmly when emotions are high.
You’ll explore how to use LEAP to navigate difficult conversations, de-escalate challenging interactions, maintain appropriate boundaries and recognise when it’s time to involve someone else.
You’ll also learn how service recovery, ownership, follow-through and constructive feedback can help restore trust and turn difficult moments into opportunities to learn and improve.
Along the way, you’ll reflect on your own responses and identify practical strategies you can take back into your role.

Take Your Learning Into Practice
Across The Empowered DA Series, you’ve explored the impact you can have through the way you show up, the habits you bring to your role and the way you respond when things don’t go to plan.
Now it’s about putting that learning into practice.
Return to your Action Plans, choose the changes you want to carry forward and keep building the small, consistent behaviours that strengthen patient care, teamwork and your contribution to the practice.
You don’t need to change everything at once. Start with what you can influence and build from there.
